Groundwork commissioned 11 unique artworks for and about Milton Keynes. These were each opened or premiered at the Groundwork Weekender in September 2018.
Six of the artworks were developed out of Groundwork Residencies, and each of these works were actively developed in collaboration with different community groups in Milton Keynes. These were presented by artists Aaron James, Beatrice Jarvis, Hayley Newman, Laura Cooper, Phil Smith and Sapphire Goss.
Four of the commissions were designed to support emerging Milton Keynes based artists. This commission came with a fee, mentoring time, and three months of studio space. These artists were Anna Berry, Katie Ellen-Fields, Priya Chohan-Padia and Thomas Cuthbertson.
One of the commissions was designed specifically to help facilitate the Groundwork Weekender. This was The Coach Trip by Hunt & Darton. This piece responded to Milton Keynes’ low-density, road-focused layout which can present barriers to participation and access to cultural events. In order to combat this The Coach Trip was a durational performance combined with a transportation service between each of the Weekender events.
